Fly Fishing Lessons

Fly fishing lessons and instruction is everywhere.  On the web, television, DVDs, and of course even by Trout Unlimited and other fishing groups.  So why should you pay for it and hire someone like me to teach you?  Well you get what you pay for in most instances and to put it bluntly with all the new equipment, the wealth of information, books and info you would think that fly fishermen are getting better!  Right?  Well think again, the exact opposite is happening.  There are many reasons why this is true and unfortunately it's getting worse.

As an aquatic and environmental scientist I study systems.  Most politicians, economists, and other assorted dead beats have no clue to how systems work and function.  One of the cardinal misunderstandings of systems is the amount of information that can go into them without diminishing returns.  Fly fishing has been overwhelmed with information (misinformation) and much of it is bad.  The fly angler cannot distinguish what is good and what is hogwash (Photo below shows one my students looking over a spring creek. These are tough fish and it's not easy but can be rewarding once you learn the techniques).

Spring Creek Fishing

Almost all of the television shows I watch on fly fishing will hurt most anglers if they subscribe to what they have just watched.  Furthermore, websites are even worse.  Most of the fly anglers I instruct, guide or meet seldom even have the right equipment.  They aren't good casters even though they have taken lessons and have no idea what to do on a stream except throw the fly out there.

This is especially true on spring creeks where the success rates for most fly anglers is almost zero. Fly anglers seem to hit a wall and never get any better. They stay at the same point for years believing that some new equipment or new fly will make all the difference in the world. Dream on!  I have taught fly fishing in many different places. I have even taught it with Lefty Kreh at the Masters of Fly Fishing School on the exclusive Spruce Creek.  I've known Lefty for years and he is the best overall fly angler in the world because he has no peer in saltwater fly fishing.

Here are some of the fly fishing lessons I can give you to increase your skill set:

Fly Casting: Technique and Methods and Why Accuracy is the most important thing.

Reading Water: Most fly anglers cannot do this and in most instances you are severely limiting your chances of success.

Methods and Techniques:  Many fly anglers today only wish to fish dry flies.  They lack practical skills in nymph, wet fly, and streamer fishing. There aren't many stream where you can always expect rising trout. I teach special nymph techniques for all types of streams since spring creeks have their own methods which are superior to what is commonly used.

Fly Selection and understanding stream entomology.

Stealth techniques for wary fish.

Understanding Environmental conditions in fishing.

The Truth About Matching the Hatch and how to do it properly.

These are just a few of the things you can learn.  Do you really want to learn how to fish a spring creek or are you going to just try the stuff you used on a freestone stream and hope it works?  I can take years off your itinerary to becoming a proficient fly angler.  The information on these lessons is free so contact me if you want to get better at this game. I can structure it anyway you want and I'll be glad to combine things if you want for many areas that you need help in. Just drop me a line below or the contact page and I'll be glad to discuss things with you.
